Paper Description
This paper introduces the nature, contexts and purposes of applied theatre practice. Students will explore how theatre can be used as a tool for critical enquiry, empowerment and social change. It will introduce and consider the historical development of applied theatre, current debates, methodologies and case studies within the field.

Workload
This is a 30point paper. One point equates to approximately 10 learning hours, so this paper equates to approximately 300 notional learning hours over the semester. Students will have between 1 - 3 hours contact time per week with their lecturer, with additional workshops scheduled to engage with relevant external applied theatre projects. Independent study time should be approximately 18 hours per week.
Linkages to Other Papers
For students focussed on completing an M Arts in Theatre Studies and/or Dance, this paper should be taken alongside THSTS544 as preparation for either THSTS592 (dissertation), or THSTS593 or THSTS594 (3 or 4 paper thesis).
Other students may also enrol in this paper as their one complementary paper option outside their main study area.
